Made to be kept
A screen shows a photograph for a second. A page holds it. Panoramas run across the fold, frames sit in white space, the words you wrote stay next to the pictures they belong to.

He has walked this street every evening for forty years. Probably.
Dusk
Nobody tells you when the evening starts here. The towers simply swallow the last of the sun, and the streets go grey, then blue, then black, and the signs come on one by one as if they had been waiting for permission. The alleys go first. They were never bright to begin with — a slot of sky at the top, a drain down the middle, a door somebody has propped open with a crate. You walk through them faster than you need to, and you don’t know why.09

Sign over sign, window over window.
Looking up
The city is built upwards: signs stacked on signs, air-conditioners on balconies, towers on top of shops.

Seen from the bus: one more tower going up.
Everything here is new — even the things that look old.
